What Is the Best GSM for Bath Towels? A Simple Guide

Short answer: for everyday bath towels, 500 to 650 GSM is the sweet spot. It feels plush, absorbs well, and still dries between showers. Go higher (650 to 800 GSM) only if you want a heavy spa-style towel and your bathroom has good airflow. Go lower (300 to 450 GSM) for the gym, the beach, or travel.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is the weight of the fabric: take one square meter of the towel and weigh it. A higher number means more cotton in the same area, usually longer and denser loops, and a thicker towel.
For reference, a 550 GSM bath towel of 27 × 56 inches weighs about 540 grams, or roughly 1.2 pounds.
Towel GSM ranges at a glance
| GSM | How it feels | Drying time (hung) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300–400 | Thin and light | A few hours | Gym, travel, kitchen, beach |
| 400–600 | Soft and substantial | Half a day | Everyday bath towels, guest bathrooms |
| 600–800 | Thick and plush, hotel-style | Overnight | Spa feel, bathrooms with good airflow |
| 800+ | Very heavy, almost like a rug | Needs a heated rail or dryer | Commercial spas |
The best GSM by use
- Everyday bath towel: 500–650 GSM. Plush enough to feel like a treat, light enough to dry by the next shower.
- Guest bathroom: 450–600 GSM. Guests notice softness more than weight.
- Humid bathroom or no window: 400–550 GSM. A slightly lighter towel dries faster and stays fresh.
- Spa-style bathroom with a heated rail: 600–800 GSM.
- Gym and travel: 300–400 GSM, or a flat-woven Turkish towel.
- Beach and pool: 300–450 GSM, or a peshtemal, which folds small and dries fast.
Is higher GSM always better?
No. Past about 700 GSM the extra weight mostly adds drying time. A very heavy towel that stays damp all day can start to smell musty, and it takes up more room in the washer and dryer. The fiber matters as much as the weight: a 550 GSM towel made from long-staple Turkish cotton can feel softer than a cheaper 700 GSM towel made from short fibers.
Two other things to check along with GSM:
- Fiber: long-staple cotton (Turkish, Egyptian, Pima) sheds less and gets softer over time. Our guide to what makes Turkish cotton towels special explains why.
- Size: a bath sheet at the same GSM holds far more water than a bath towel simply because it is bigger.
What GSM are Bagno Milano towels and robes?
- Luxury Jacquard Towels, Hotel Collection Towels, Elegance Towels and Auraline Towels: 550 GSM, our everyday sweet spot.
- Organic Luxury Jacquard Border Towels: 600 GSM, our heaviest and plushest towel.
- Kids hooded towels: 500 GSM, soft but light enough for small arms.
- Terry robes: 380 GSM. Waffle pique robes: 220 GSM, light and quick-drying.
- Peshtemals: flat-woven, so GSM does not apply. A peshtemal weighs about 11 oz (300 g) and dries much faster than a terry towel.

Frequently asked questions
Is 550 GSM good for a bath towel?
Yes. 550 GSM is in the middle of the ideal range for everyday bath towels: plush, absorbent, and quick enough to dry between uses.
Is 600 GSM better than 500 GSM?
It is thicker and a little more absorbent, but it also takes longer to dry. Choose 600 if you prefer a heavier feel and your bathroom dries out well between showers.
Do towels lose GSM over time?
A little, as loose fibers wash out, especially in the first few washes. Good long-staple cotton loses much less. Washing warm, skipping fabric softener, and tumble drying on low keeps towels plush for longer. See our care guide.
What GSM do hotels use?
Many upscale hotels use bath towels between 550 and 700 GSM, heavy enough to feel luxurious but light enough for commercial laundries to dry quickly.
